What Temperature Should You Keep Your Home in the Summer If You Have Pets?

As the summer heat kicks in around the Toronto area, it’s not just your comfort that matters—it’s your pets’ well-being too. Dogs, cats, and other animals can overheat quickly, and they rely on you to keep their environment safe and cool. One of the best ways to do that is by setting the right temperature indoors. But what’s the ideal summer temperature for your home in Celsius when you have pets?

The Ideal Indoor Temperature for Pets in Summer

Veterinarians generally recommend keeping your home between 23°C and 26°C (73°F to 79°F) during the warmer months if you have pets. This range ensures your animals stay comfortable and safe, even when it’s sweltering outside.

Here’s a quick breakdown based on common pet types:

  • Dogs: Most dogs are comfortable in temperatures between 22°C and 26°C. Brachycephalic breeds (like Bulldogs and Pugs) or dogs with thick coats may need it cooler—closer to 22°C.

  • Cats: Cats handle heat a little better than dogs, but they still appreciate a cool, shaded space. 24°C to 26°C is generally fine, though older cats or ones with medical issues may need a cooler environment.

  • Small mammals (like rabbits, guinea pigs, and hamsters): These pets are especially sensitive to heat. Keep the temperature closer to 21°C to 24°C, and make sure their enclosures are not in direct sunlight.

When You're Not Home

If you're away at work, set your thermostat to around 24°C. It’s a good balance between comfort and energy efficiency. Smart thermostats are especially helpful—you can adjust the temperature remotely if needed.
