BBQ Foods Your Dog Should Avoid

Barbecues are a summer favorite, and while it’s tempting to share the fun—and the food—with your furry friend, not all BBQ staples are safe for dogs. In fact, many common cookout items can be harmful or even toxic.

1. Bones (especially cooked ones): Cooked bones from ribs, chicken, or steak can splinter and cause choking or serious digestive issues. Never give your dog leftover bones from the grill.

2. Corn on the cob: While corn itself isn’t harmful, the cob poses a major choking hazard and can cause dangerous blockages in your dog’s intestines.

3. Hot dogs and sausages: These processed meats are high in sodium and fat. Some may contain spices, onions, or garlic—ingredients that are toxic to dogs.

4. Burgers with toppings: A plain piece of unseasoned meat is okay in small amounts, but avoid sharing burgers loaded with cheese, onions, condiments, or seasoning blends.

5. Desserts and baked goods: Many BBQs include sweets like brownies or cookies, but ingredients like chocolate, xylitol (a sugar substitute), and raisins are highly toxic to dogs.

6. Alcohol and caffeine: Even a small sip of beer, wine, or soda can make a dog very sick. Keep cups and bottles well out of reach.

Keep your dog safe and happy by sticking to pet-friendly treats and keeping a watchful eye around the grill. If in doubt, it’s best not to share.
