Bathing your dog

As temps get warmer in the northern hemisphere, to some, it means the return of spring. To others, it means wiping mud off paws and coats of dogs (and sometimes cats). With all the mud flying, what's the lowdown on bathing your dog?

For most dogs, a bath every 4–6 weeks is a good rule of thumb. Dogs with oily coats (like Basset Hounds) may need more frequent baths, while those with water-repellent or double coats (like Golden Retrievers or Huskies) should be bathed less often to avoid stripping natural oils.

If your dog loves rolling in mud or has allergies, you might need to bathe them more frequently using a gentle, vet-approved shampoo. On the other hand, over-bathing can lead to dry skin and irritation, so unless your pup is visibly dirty or smelly, it’s okay to stretch the time between baths.

Regular brushing, paw cleaning, and occasional dry shampooing can help keep your dog fresh between baths. As always, consult your vet for personalized advice based on your dog's specific needs!
