Summer brings sunshine, longer days, and more time outdoors—but for our furry friends, the heat can be more dangerous than enjoyable. Dogs don’t sweat like humans do, so it's up to us to help them stay cool and safe during hot weather. Here are some simple, effective ways to keep your dog comfortable during the summer months:
1. Provide Plenty of Fresh, Cool Water
Hydration is key. Make sure your dog always has access to fresh, clean water. On extra-hot days, drop a few ice cubes in their bowl to keep it cooler longer. When you're out and about, bring a portable water bottle and bowl.
2. Avoid the Midday Heat
The sun is at its strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Try to walk your dog early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are lower. Hot pavement can burn paws—if it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for your dog’s feet.
3. Offer Shade and Cool Resting Areas
If your dog spends time outside, make sure they have access to shade at all times. Trees, umbrellas, or a doghouse in a shaded spot can help. Indoors, use fans or air conditioning to keep the environment comfortable.
4. Use Cooling Mats and Wet Towels
Cooling mats are a great investment—they provide a cool surface for your dog to lie on. You can also wet a towel with cool (not icy) water and lay it on the floor for them to rest on. Never use ice-cold water directly on your dog, as it can cause shock.
5. Limit Exercise
Dogs can overheat quickly during physical activity. On hot days, shorten walks and avoid intense play. Watch for signs of overheating like excessive panting, drooling, or disorientation.
6. Try Frozen Treats
Make DIY dog popsicles using ingredients like plain yogurt, peanut butter (xylitol-free), and fruit. These treats are not only fun and tasty but also help keep your pup cool from the inside out.

7. Never Leave Your Dog in a Hot Car
Even with the windows cracked, temperatures inside a car can soar dangerously high in just minutes. Leaving a dog in a hot car can be fatal and is illegal in many places.
